Inverness Castle has undergone a complete transformation in recent years. And now – as a brand new visitor experience – it has thrown open its doors anew and welcomed its first visitors. Public tickets are on sale NOW and the castle is open – a soft launch. The formal opening will take place in the early Spring of next year.
Within the Castle’s North Tower you will find the brand new Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands, which artist Andrew Crummy and historian Alistair Moffat – both key members of the original Great Tapestry of Scotland team – worked on along with the incredible stitch guru Kirstie Campbell and the project management team Jan Rutherford, Ben Makin and Anna Marshall – all working in tandem with the real stars of the project, the quite wonderful stitchers of all ages, abilities and levels of experience from across the region. The stitchers took Andrews artwork and translated it into a stunning, hand embroidered story of Scotland’s Highlands and Islands with applique using local wools, tweeds, even shells. A remarkable team and all incredibly generous with their time and talents. We are grateful to you all.
You can get your tickets for these preview weeks now. Follow this link to book.
Here are few comments from two stitchers who have had a sneak peek…
‘THE DISPLAY IS SUPERLATIVE, there are no words…
The Castle renovation is beyond good. Some disabled parking through the grounds from
View Place. All staff so warm, happy and welcoming….
It has been really worth the wait. Our efforts are beautifully crafted, mounted and
displayed, the whole thing is beyond words. Fab-u-lous.’ – Carole on socials
I went this afternoon, It was wonderful to see the Tapestries.
They are a special work of art that connects to the highlands, and
grows out of the highlands. Truly beautiful.
I am so glad that they are in a separate part of the castle as the contrast is
so vast between the aesthetic of the Tapestries and the ‘immersive experience’
of the flashing lights and busy sound scape of the of the other part of the castle.’ – Lizzie on socials
