ABOUT US

BE SEEN, BE HEARD... GROW

The world is changing and marketing needs a firm touch and a fresh, adventurous approach.

Jan Rutherford established Publicity & The Printed Word (PPW) in 1992 as a continuation of a successful career in publishing and broadcasting in London and Edinburgh. The agency aims to raise the profile of books, writers and related arts projects through event-centred and media savvy promotion – new broadcast, digital and print media, social platforms and app content, and both live and online events. AND large project management and delivery.

So far so pretty good… In a consultancy role we have offered expertise to The Great Tapestry of Scotland, direct to authors – including one of the world’s best-loved authors, Alexander McCall Smith – to publishers in the UK and USA, and arts organisations, book, audio and magazine publishers (in particular Scottish Review of Books) and have worked on nearly all of Scotland’s major book awards.

We have generated apps, social media reading groups and creative gatherings. We’ve animated bookcovers and filmed events for online viewing. We have taken our authors into pig fields and thigh-high into seaweed to get that perfect shot! And we’ve used wools that stretch the length of Scotland to tell a nation’s story.

Our authors range from emerging to award-winners and their stars are shining bright.

Our creative projects are attracting attention right round the globe.

Based in one of the most creative cities in the world this agency works with publishers, writers, arts bodies and galleries – wherever they might happen to be.

What we do

Media and event driven promotion, project management, touring, advertising and content creation, author events and arts workshops.

Our approach is informal and open, collaborative and inclusive. We go the extra mile to position our clients exactly where they want to be.

The way the arts are consumed is changing. Old marketing ways don’t always work. Community building and communication are essential.
